What Is Project Methodology?

Project Methodology

A project methodology is the body of knowledge and procedures that allows you to manage your project from the start to the finish. Most projects, when broken down according to task, follow a predefined set of stages. This is known as the project lifecycle. Software development, web development, building development are all examples of activities that can be broken down and put back together according to a set group of tasks. In fact, every type of activity, if examined closely enough follows a set stage of evolution from conception to completion.

A project methodology is an attempt to formalize the steps that comprise the process to establish a framework of reference and set of operating standards so that all team members that are engaged in the process know exactly what tasks are required to be completed and when. This project management methodology assists organizations to expedite and manage workflow to leverage resources, control costs and increase productivity.

There are several different project planning methodologies. Most methodologies follow a similar structure but are based on the core pillars of project management, namely: evaluation, planning, resourcing/scheduling, task management, tracking/reporting and implementation. A project planning methodology essentially establishes a set framework of reference that scopes and bounds these activities. Some organizations develop a hybrid approach that shapes these principles in accordance with the organizations operating structure and culture. Other organizations, such as government departments, often have established mandates that require project professionals to follow established methodologies such as the Pricne2 methodology or PMBOK.

The Prince2 methodology is a recognized and established method for project management. The focus of Prince2 is the business case which describes the rationale and business justification for the project and consists of the following characteristics: a defined life cycle, defined and measurable business products, a set of activities to achieve the business products, a defined amount of resources and an organization structure with defined responsibilities to manage the project. Many organizations require Prince2 certification as a condition of employment for project managers. Accredited training organizations provide the necessary training and examination to gain this certification.

PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) was a white paper originally published in 1987 as a set of standards that generally constitute project methodology standards and guidelines. In fact, PMI (Project Management Institute) is an attempt to gain greater recognition for project management professionals by providing a common set of standards and establishing education and certification to assist project managers with obtaining qualifications, recognition and career progression. If you work in highly structured environments which involve the contribution of several team members, it is likely that you will be exposed to some form of project methodology. An understanding of the basic components of a project methodology can be helpful to individuals looking to learn more about managing projects from start to finish.
