Though many companies spend a great deal on product development, one critical place that they often fall short is project testing. Project testing can mean many things, but its presence in business and industry is unquestioned as are the results that it garners. As important as it is, it is still an area that many corporations are failing to address and the final product suffers for it.

The most intuitive place for project testing is at the end of the project, where most if not all of the material is finished. While this will fulfill the goal of having the product be passed with few flaws, there are a few serious flaws with this sort of project test approach. The first concern is that if the project itself has been built on a shaky foundation there may be a great deal of material that needs to be redone or fixed. Similarly, time can certainly be a factor in this case. You'll find that if there is a deadline, having to test and fix the product can sorely test this.

One solution that is often used is project testing at many different levels of the process. While some dismiss this as unnecessary bureaucratic nonsense, project management testing is actually one of the best ways to make sure that your product maintains a certain amount of quality and that the value of the project itself doesn't decrease over time.

One of the main questions that needs to be asked about a project is what goal is it eventually meant to serve. With routine project testing this question can continue to be asked and the validity of the project can be constantly evaluated. This way, if it turns out that the project testing is no longer meeting the needs of the company or can no longer fulfill the purposes that it was originally intended to fill, the project can be canceled before it wastes too much time, money and manpower.

Project testing can affect every level and every aspect of the project, whether its meant to address the capabilities of the people working on it, or the validity of the project, or its technological basis. Constant reevaluation is key to making sure that the end product is something that will do what it is intended to do. A good project management test will not hamper the flow of the project, nor will it add more people to the mix than are appropriate. It is actually something of a slippery slope. When you do project testing, make sure that you employ a valid testing methodology. Project testing is often accused of being thinly veiled micromanagement, and to avoid this, you need to remember that project testing is meant to benefit the project as a whole.
